Buspirone general information

What is Buspirone used for?

Buspirone 5mg tablets are used to treat anxiety disorders with or without accompanying depression; and also helps relieve short-term symptoms of anxiety. Buspirone 5 is not used for ordinary anxiety and tension associated with the stress of everyday life, but does help manage symptoms of generalised persistent anxiety, a disorder that has symptoms including: shakiness, trembling, tension, muscle aches, inability to relax, restlessness, sweating, racing heart, cold clammy hands, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, worry, fear, difficulty in concentrating and insomnia.

How does Buspirone work?

Buspirone 5mg tablets contain buspirone which is an anxiolytic drug that has a different mechanism of action to other drugs that have psychotropic effects (alters brain function). It is thought to act on receptors in the brain that interact with specific neurotransmitters (chemical messengers that allow nerve cells to communicate), including, serotonin, noradrenaline, acetylcholine and dopamine. Buspirone increases noradrenaline and dopamine, which are involved in controlling mood, and decrease serotonin and acetylcholine, which can block the production of noradrenaline and dopamine. Buspirone does not act on benzodiazepine receptor sites and therefore exerts its antianxiety effects without sedation, muscle relaxation, and without compromising mental alertness. Since anxiety is thought to be due to an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, restoring the balance helps relieve symptoms of anxiety, like fear, tension, irritability, dizziness, pounding heartbeat, and other physical symptoms.
