Vivitonin tablets contain propentofylline, a vasodilator that widens blood vessels and increases blood flow; and a bronchodilator that widens airways. They are used to treat lethargy in dogs and treat circulation and breathing problems in older dogs.

Vivitonin general information

What is Vivitonin used for?

Vivitonin tablets 100mg are a medication for dogs and are used to improve dull and lethargic behaviour and generally to help improve your dogs’s overall demeanour. Vivitonin tablets are also used to treat circulation and breathing problems in older dogs and is particularly helpful in encouraging older dogs to be more willing to exercise as they increase tolerance to exercise so that your dog not is not worn out by a walk.

How does Vivitonin work?

Vivitonin tablets contain the xanthine derivative propentofylline, which is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and also acts as an adenosine reuptake inhibitor. Both these actions cause vasodilation or relaxing and widening of blood vessels, which increases blood flow, particularly to the heart and skeletal muscle and to the brain; increasing oxygen supply and reducing resistance to blood flow which reduces the workload on the heart. Propentofylline in Vivitonin tablets also has direct effects on the heart and increases the heart rate and the force of muscular contraction of the heart. These actions are particularly helpful for dogs with heart problems. Another action of Propentofylline in Vivitonin tablets is to act as a bronchodilator, which widens the airways and helps increase air flow to the lungs. These actions help your dog by improving circulation and oxygen supply and this will give your dog more energy and help reduce lethargy.

What does Vivitonin contain?

What doses of Vivitonin are available?

Vivitonin tablets are available to buy from Inhouse Pharmacy in two doses, 50mg and 100mg tablets.

When should Vivitonin not be used?

You should not use Vivitonin for your dog if your dog:

  • is pregnant or lactating
  • has kidney disease
  • is already receiving medication for congestive heart failure or bronchial disease

How should you give Vivitonin to your dog?

You should give Vivitonin tablets to your dog twice a day at least 30 minutes before feeding. You can either administer the tablets directly by placing at the back of the tongue or wrapped in a small ball of food. The dose you give depends on the size and weight of your dog. When you have administered a dose of Vivitonin to your dog, ensure that you wash your hands to prevent you from ingesting any.

What is the correct dose of Vivitonin to give your dog?

The recommended dose is 5mg per kg body weight twice a day.



Use the following chart to help you work out the dose:

< 5 kg ¼ of 50mg tablet 

5 kg ½ tab   of 50mg tablet

10 kg 1 tab   of 50mg tablet

15 kg 1½tabs   of 50mg tablet

20 kg - 1 tab of 100mg tablet

30 kg - 1½ tabs of 100mg tablet

40 kg - 2 tabs  of 100mg tablet

Missed dose of Vivitonin

If you forget to give your dog a dose of Vivitonin tablets, administer it as soon as you remember, unless it is time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not administer a double dose.

How should Vivitonin be stored?

You should store your Vivitonin tablets below 25°C in a cool dry place.
