Estradiol general information
What is Estradiol used for?
Estradiol tablets 2mg are a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to substitute for a lack of oestrogen production by the ovaries that happens during menopause, to relieve symptoms of menopause caused by oestrogen deficiency, such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleeplessness, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings, lack of concentration and loss of energy. Estradiol tablets 2mg also are also used to help prevent postmenopausal bone loss (osteoporosis) and reduce risk of fracture. Estradiol tablets 2mg are also used to treat hypoestrogenism (low estrogen levels) due to hypogonadism (underdeveloped ovaries), which causes delayed puberty due to lack of estrogen production, failure of the ovaries to produce sufficient estrogen or following surgical removal of the ovaries. Estradiol tablets 2mg are used for palliative treatment in certain types of advanced cancers in men and women. Estradiol tablets 2mg stimulate the development of female sexual characteristics and are used as part of a transgender hormone therapy for male to female transsexuals.
How does Estradiol work?
Estradiol tablets 2mg contain estradiol, the major and the most active form of the female hormone estrogen and works in the same way as naturally produced estrogen. Estradiol in Estradiol tablets 2mg is micronized, or reduced to tiny particles, so that it is better absorbed and can be taken orally as tablets. Estrogen is a steroid hormone produced by the ovaries that binds to specific receptors inside oestrogen-responsive cells and stimulates them to make proteins involved in producing secondary sexual characteristics, such as breast development and in regulating the menstrual cycle. Estrogen also has several other actions in various metabolic processes including maintaining bone mass and lipid (fat) metabolism.
