Orni 500 general information

What is Orni 500 used for?

Orni 500 tablets 500mg are used to treat bacterial infections caused by certain anaerobic bacteria and parasitic infections caused by protozoan (single cell) parasites.  Protozoan infections that Orni 500 tablets are used for are trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection of the female and male genitourinary tract, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis; giardiasis caused by Giardia lamblia and amoebiasis (also known as amoebic dysentery), caused by Entamoeba histolytica, both intestinal infections and transmitted by contaminated food and water, causing diarrhoea and abdominal pain.  Bacterial infections that Orni 500 tablets are used for include bacterial vaginosis, a vaginal infection (also known as non-specific vaginitis caused by overgrowth of bacteria normally found in the vagina.  Anaerobic bacteria are certain types of bacteria that grow without oxygen and cause infections including septicaemia, a serious infection of the blood; endometritis an infection of the uterine lining; peritonitis, an infection of the abdominal lining, puerperal sepsis, an infection of the female reproductive tract following childbirth, meningitis, an infection of the brain lining; and post-operative wound infections.  Orni 500 tablets are used to treat these infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, also as prophylaxis to prevent infections following surgery, particularly colon and gynaecological surgery.

How does Orni 500 work?

Orni 500 tablets 500mg contain ornidazole that is used to treat certain bacterial and protozoal infections.  Ornidazole in Orni 500 tablets has activity against species of anaerobic bacteria belonging to the bacteroides, fusobacteria, clostridia, eubacteria, and anaerobic cocci; also against gardnerella vaginalis and the protozoal pathogens, trichomonas, entamoeba histolytica and giardia lamblia.  Ornidazole in Orni 500 tablets works by entering the cell of a susceptible bacteria or protozoa and damaging its DNA, which blocks essential protein synthesis and disrupts its structure and inhibits DNA synthesis, thereby preventing microbial cell growth.

What are the side effects of Orni 500?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Orni 500 include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, vertigo, dermatitis, itching skin.

When should Orni 500 not be used?

You should not use Orni 500 if you:

• are allergic to ornidazole or any ingredients in Orni 500
• are pregnant or are breastfeeding
• have liver disease
• you have neurological disorder, including epilepsy
• have been drinking alcohol within 72 hours
• are taking medicines that interact with Orni 500 including anticoagulants like warfarin, the muscle relaxant vecuronium bromide

How should Orni 500 be taken?

You should take your Orni 500 tablets swallowed whole with a glass of water and with food at the same time each day.  The dose you take and how often depends on what you are being treated for and should be as recommended by your doctor and may be a single dose or several doses over several days.  You should continue to take your Orni 500 tablets for as long as recommended by your doctor and until you have finished your course of treatment, but only until your infection has cleared up, as they are not intended for long term use.

Missed dose of Orni 500

If you miss a dose of Orni 500 tablets take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not take a double dose.

How should Orni 500 be stored?

You should store your Orni 500 tablets below 25°C in a cool dry place and protect from light.
