Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops general information

What is Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops used for?

Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% are used to treat external bacterial infections of the eye.  These include corneal ulcer, which is an open sore on the surface of the cornea, the clear surface covering the front of the eye, including the pupil and iris.  Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% are also used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, an infection of the conjunctiva, which is the mucous membrane covering the outside of the eye and lining the inside of the eyelids.  Blepharitis, which is inflammation of the eyelid can be caused by bacterial infection.  Symptoms of eye infection include, pain, foreign body sensation (a feeling of something in the eye), gritty sensation, redness, discharge from the eye, blurred vision, sensitivity to light.  Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% prevent spread of infection and help relieve symptoms of infection of the eye.

How does Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops work?

Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% contain the antibiotic ciprofloxacin a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolones group of antibiotics.  Ciprofloxacin in Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% has antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria including the most common bacterial species to infect the eye, which are Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Haemophilus and Pseudomonas.  Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting several bacterial enzymes (bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase) needed for the bacteria to replicate and repair its DNA.  This action of ciprofloxacin in Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% kills the bacteria by blocking its growth and replication and prevents the spread of infection.

What does Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops contain?

Ciprofloxacin Eye Drops 0.3% contain the active ingredient ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat eye infections.  They also contain the preservative benzalkonium chloride (0.06 mg/mL), glacial acetic acid, sodium acetate anhydrous, mannitol, disodium edetate, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and water.
