Terbicip general information

What is Terbicip used for?

Terbicip cream 1% is a topical medication used to treat fungal infection of the skin, caused by the Trichophyton dermatophytes that cause tinea infections such as tinea pedis or ringworm of the foot, commonly known as athlete’s foot.  Terbicip cream 1% can also be used for tinea infection in other parts of the body, including: ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), the groin (tinea cruris; jock itch), and tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor), also known as pityriasis, due to infection with Pityrosporum orbiculare (or Malassezia furfur) that causes a round or oval shaped skin rash.  Terbicip cream 1% is also used to treat infections with the fungus Epidermophyton floccosum that causes skin and nail infections; also, infections of the skin caused by the yeast fungus Candida albicans, also known as candidiasis or thrush.  Terbicip cream 1% helps relieve symptoms of fungal infection, itching, inflammation, redness, peeling and cracking or the skin.

How does Terbicip work?

Terbicip cream 1% contains terbinafine, a broad spectrum allylamine antifungal that is used to treat a variety of fungal infections of the skin and is particularly effective against dermatophyte fungi such as Trichophyton fungi that cause tinea infections in different parts of the body; also yeasts like Candida that cause candidiasis or thrush.  Terbinafine in Terbicip cream 1% inhibits a fungal enzyme, squalene epoxidase, which prevents the synthesis of ergosterol, a sterol that is the main component of the fungal cell membrane.  The result is that the fungal cell membrane becomes weakened causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus and prevents the infection from spreading.  Terbinafine in Terbicip cream 1% concentrates rapidly in skin, hair and nails reaching levels that kills the fungal infection.
