Rexacrom general information

What is Rexacrom used for?

Rexacrom eye drops 2% are used for prevention and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, which is an allergic reaction in the eye that causes irritation and inflammation of the eye.  The conjunctiva is the membrane that lines the insides of the eyelids and covers the front of the eye.  Allergic conjunctivitis can be caused by various different allergens (any substance, usually a protein, that induces an allergy, which is an overreaction by the immune system to a perceived harmful substance) and can be seasonal, caused by pollen (hay fever) or perennial, caused by allergens such a house dust mites, mould or animal fur.  Rexacrom eye drops 2% are also used to treat vernal kerato conjunctivitis, which is a rare, chronic form of eye allergy usually seasonal and more frequent in hot dry climates; it may result in severe visual complications.  Rexacrom eye drops 2% act locally on the eye to relieve symptoms like itchy red, swollen and watery eyes.

How does Rexacrom work?

Rexacrom eye drops 2% contain sodium cromoglycate, an antiallergenic agent that works as a mast cell stabilizer and is used to treat allergic conjunctivitis.  Mast cells are white blood cell that are part of the immune system and form the first line of defence against pathogens in the environment, being found in the skin and all mucosal membranes that line the various body cavities and internal organs, including the conjunctiva of eyes.  When mast cells are exposed to specific allergens, they become sensitised and undergo degranulation, which is the release histamine and cytokines along with several other mediators are stored in mast cell granules.  This initiates an allergic response which also leads to inflammation.  Sodium cromoglycate in Rexacrom eye drops 2% inhibits the release of histamine and other mediators from the mast cells, which prevents stimulation of an allergic response in the eye and relieves symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.

What does Rexacrom contain?

Rexacrom eye drops contain the active ingredient sodium cromoglycate (2% in a sterile preserved solution), an antiallergenic agent that is use to stabilise mast cells and treat symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.  They also contain the preservative benzalkonium chloride.
