Lisinopril (Ethics) general information
What is Lisinopril (Ethics) used for?
Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg are used to treat essential hypertension, which is high blood pressure when at rest, by lowering blood pressure to normal resting levels; also for renovascular hypertension, which is a form of secondary hypertension caused by narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys. Lowering high blood pressure reduces risk of stroke, heart attack and end organ damage such as kidney disease. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 is also used to treat congestive heart failure, by helping weakened heart muscles pump more efficiently and reducing feelings of breathlessness on exertion; also for asymptomatic patients with left ventricular dysfunction, to reduce risk of disease progression and need for hospitalisation in patients with congestive heart failure. If used within 24 hours of a heart attack, Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg can help prevent heart failure, in conjunction with other heart medications, and improve survival. Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg can be used alone as monotherapy or with a diuretic, which helps get rid of excess water that is retained in body tissues and can cause swelling (oedema).
How does Lisinopril (Ethics) work?
Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg contain lisinopril, an Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that prevents the formation of angiotensin II, a hormone that has several actions involved in regulating blood pressure, which is the force needed to pump blood around the body. Angiotensin II causes salt and water retention by the kidneys, and causes blood vessels to constrict (narrow); this increases blood volume while at the same time reducing blood vessel volume, which increases blood pressure. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 inhibits the conversion of angiotensin II from angiotensin I, which allows blood vessels to relax and widen, reducing the force needed by the heart to pump blood around the body, reducing its workload and lowering blood pressure. This also helps weakened heart muscle, such as in congestive heart failure, to work more efficiently and reduces symptoms of breathlessness on exertion.
What does Lisinopril (Ethics) contain?
Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg contain the active ingredient lisinopril, an ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitor that is used to treat hypertension and heart failure. They also contain calcium hydrogen phosphate dehydrate, magnesium stearate, maize starch, mannitol and ferric oxide red.
Treating hypertension (high blood pressure) with Lisinopril (Ethics)
Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg contain lisinopril, an ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitor, used to treat primary hypertension, which is high blood pressure when at rest, in people with high blood pressure who are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke and heart attack; also for renovascular hypertension, which is a form of secondary hypertension caused by narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 inhibits the formation of angiotensin II, a hormone that has several actions involved in regulating blood pressure, which is the force needed to pump blood around the body. Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg relax and widen blood vessels, reducing the force needed by the heart to pump blood around the body, reducing its workload and lowering blood pressure, which reduces the risk of complications such as stroke, heart attack and kidney disease due to high blood pressure.
Lisinopril (Ethics) for treating congestive heart failure
Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg contain lisinopril, an ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitor that is used to treat congestive heart failure, which is when the heart muscles are weakened and cannot pump with sufficient force to supply blood to all parts of the body. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 inhibits the formation of angiotensin II that causes vasoconstriction (constriction and narrowing of blood vessels), allowing relaxation and widening of blood vessels. This action of Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 reduces the force needed for the heart to pump blood around the body and helps weakened heart muscle to work more efficiently, reducing symptoms of breathlessness on exertion. Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg may also be used with a diuretic to help get rid of excess water that is retained in body tissues causing swelling (oedema), as a result of congestive heart failure.
What are the side effects of Lisinopril (Ethics)?
The most commonly reported side effects when taking Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg include: dizziness, headache, tiredness, dyspnoea (shortness of breath), persistent dry cough, altered taste, nausea, diarrhoea abdominal pain, skin rash, hypotension (low blood pressure).
When should Lisinopril (Ethics) not be used?
You should not use Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg if you:
- are allergic to lisinopril or other ACE inhibitor or any ingredients in Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg
- are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding
- have hereditary and/or idiopathic angioedema (rapid swelling under the skin similar to hives) or angioedema associated with previous treatment with an ACE inhibitor
- have kidney or liver disease
- are taking potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes
- are taking other medications that interact with lisinopril, including: other antihypertensive medication, potassium-sparing diuretics like spironolactone, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) like diclofenac or ibuprofen, lithium for mood disturbances, some diabetes medication like insulin and metformin
- are taking Co-trimoxazole (Sulphamexthoxazole/Trimethoprim) [Trusul/Bactrim DS]
What medications interact with Lisinopril (Ethics)?
Several medications interact with Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg and should either not be taken while you are taking Lisinopril (Ethics) or only after discussion and instruction from your doctor:
- Drugs that cause a serious reaction with Lisinopril (Ethics): potassium-sparing diuretics like spironolactone may cause low blood calcium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) like diclofenac or ibuprofen and angiotensin receptor antagonists can cause kidney problems.
- Drugs that affect Lisinopril (Ethics): other antihypertensives like methyldopa, calcium entry blockers or beta blockers increase the antihypertensive effect and result in additive fall in blood pressure.
- Drugs that are affected by Lisinopril (Ethics): lithium for mood disorders, antidiabetics like insulin and oral hypoglycaemic drugs like metformin.
How should Lisinopril (Ethics) be taken?
You should take your Lisinopril (Ethics) tablets 5mg with a glass of water once a day with or without food but at the same time each day. The dose that you take depends on what you are being treated for and your doctor’s recommendation and may be increased. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 helps improve your condition but does not cure it therefore you should continue to take Lisinopril (Ethics) 5 for as long as your doctor recommends. Lisinopril (Ethics) 5mg may take a few weeks to lower blood pressure and you should keep taking Lisinopril (Ethics) even if you feel well, as often there are no symptoms for high blood pressure.
