Flucort-N general information

What is Flucort-N used for?

Flucort-N cream is used to treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions to relieve itching, redness and discomfort and other symptoms like scaling and crusting. Flucort-N cream is also used to treat allergic skin disorders including eczema, dermatitis, intertrigo (a rash in the folds of the skin), prurigo (itchy lumps on the skin), lichen planus (itchy swollen rash on the skin, mouth or tongue), psoriasis (a chronic autoimmune skin condition causing red, itchy, scaly patches of skin on the body) and discoid lupus erythematosus (a chronic skin condition causing sores and scarring usually on the face, ears and scalp). Flucort-N cream contains both an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic and is therefore particularly helpful for skin disorders that have become infected or are likely to become infected and it can be used on areas of affected skin that are moist or weeping.

How does Flucort-N work?

Flucort-N cream contains fluocinolone, a potent synthetic corticosteroid that has similar anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and immune modifying properties to naturally occurring corticosteroids. Fluocinolone in Flucort-N cream is absorbed through the skin into inflammatory cells and blocks the production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which stimulates inflammation. Fluocinolone in Flucort-N cream also narrows and constricts causes blood vessels that have become dilated (widened) and leaky allowing other inflammatory cells into the skin to escalate the inflammatory response. These combined actions reduce swelling, redness, itching and other symptoms associated with inflammation of the skin. Fluocinolone in Flucort-N also helps to modify the actions of immune cells involved in the allergic skin disorders that cause inflammation. Flucort-N cream also contains neomycin, a topical antibiotic that is often used to treat or prevent infections of the skin. Neomycin in Flucort-N cream is a broad spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that is effective against most bacteria found in infected skin. It does not absorb into the skin but inhibits the spread of bacteria that cause infection of inflammatory skin disorders. It works by blocking the synthesis of essential proteins needed for the bacteria to survive and replicate. The combination of an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic in Flucort-N cream helps relieve symptoms of inflammatory skin disorders like itching, redness, swelling and discomfort and also reduces the risk of infection.

What does Flucort-N contain?

Flucort-N cream contains two active ingredients: fluocinolone acetonide (0.025%) an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid and neomycin sulphate (0.5%) an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is used to teat topical infections.

What are the side effects of Flucort-N?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Flucort-N cream include: skin irritation at the site of application, contact dermatitis, thinning of the skin, dilated blood vessels at the surface of the skin (teleangiectasia), stretch marks (striae), delayed wound healing, dependence on steroid causing rebound effect, which may result in worsening of the skin condition when you stop using the cream. More serious side effects usually only occur after long-term use of Flucort-N cream on broken or raw skin, or under skin folds or occlusive dressings, which increases he chance of the steroid being absorbed. This can inhibit natural production of corticosteroids which can interfere with several body processes, including growth problems in children.

When should Flucort-N not be used?

You should not use Flucort-N cream if you:
  • are allergic to fluocinolone or neomycin or any ingredients in Flucort-N
  • are pregnant or are breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
  • have a skin disease that was primarily caused by a bacterial, viral, fungal or infection parasitic

  • have experienced side effects previously for using corticosteroids, such as stretch marks (striae), and some forms of dermatitis like dermatitis periorali (a skin rash around the mouth)
  • certain skin problems, including Ichthyosis (a condition causing rough, fish-scale like skin), juvenile plantar dermatosis (a skin problem on the feet of children), common acne or acne rosacea, fragile blood vessels, thinning of the skin.

You should apply a small amount of your Flucort-N cream to the area of skin inflammation and gently rub into the skin, 2-4 times a day. Avoid contact with the eyes and inside the mouth or nose. You doctor will advise whether you need a dressing, otherwise do not cover the skin once you have applied the cream. You should continue to use your Flucort-N cream for as long as recommended by your doctor and usually not for more than 14 days.
